The weekly “This Week In Baseball” articles overview the activities of various Pelham Minor Baseball Association teams. Teams span from T-Ball to Midget age with several rep teams representing Pelham across the region. Please watch for some familiar names throughout the season!
The PMBA T-Ball division held its annual All Star game on July 28th, with players from each of the 6 teams playing an exciting action packed game. After showing off the skills they have developed this season, the players had a chance to try the pitching machine, which is used in the Rookie Ball division. The Pelham Medical Associates Mosquito Rep team enjoyed a close game against the Niagara Falls Minors on Monday. Leading the game in the 5th inning, the Panthers enjoyed a two run double of the bat of Riley Smyth and a perfect day at the plate by Matthew Oakes. Although the team couldn’t quite hold it for the win, they gave the tough team a competitive game and kept it close until the end with great pitching by Ryan Culig and a solid offence by Lucas Grant at second. On Tuesday, the team hit the road to visit the Welland Majors at Memorial Park. Great pitching performances by Andrew Behring and Riley Smyth contributed to the 9-2 win. Mitchell Morden caught two fly balls and Julian Rubino hit two doubles in the game. Great catching by Finn Mitchell-Moore and Cameron Wells in the full seven inning game.
The Willowbrook Nurseries Pelham Panthers won 11-10 against Thorold under the lights at Sullivan Park. Michael Dkystra led the team in RBI’s, hitting a 3 run shot in the fourth. Cole Langendoen and Ryan Harold offensively contributed to the win. The evening game saw great snags by Cade Royer at short and Ethan Crick in left field. With the game tied in the 6th, Ben Martens knock and Ethan Crick’s walk off single brought in the winning run. The following night, the Pelham Panthers won their game against the Thorold Yankees 12-8 at Centennial Park. Michael Dykstra hit back to back triples in the first and second followed by Anderson Stulp with a three bagger in the fourth. Ryan Harold played a great game both offensively and defensively. Harold was 3 for 3 at bat and all over the dirt to out the Yanks. Zach Perna had a solid game behind the plate and Joseph Kita caught a long out in right field. Go Panthers Go!!
The Miller Restoration Peewee Rep team squared off against the Niagara Falls Majors in league play this week. The team gave it a good try behind pitchers Wyatt Gibson and Ethan Wells with hits from Brendan Grenville, Owen Nicholls and Cole Townson. After being hit by a pitch, Nathan Girling ran the bases expertly and made a statement with his next at bat, hitting it powerfully to right and eventually coming around to score.
